As Colorado continues refining expectations for Universal Preschool (UPK), a new requirement has been released that impacts all UPK classrooms statewide. Many providers are already deep into preparations for fall launches, so it’s important this update reaches everyone clearly.

On April 19, 2026, the state issued an Operations Memo outlining a new mandate: UPK teachers must complete an additional 8–13 hours of PDIS training. Some programs received this information right away, while others did not — so here’s a consolidated overview to help you stay on track.

What’s Included in the Update

The state has provided three key documents:

  • UPK Professional Development Requirements

  • UPK Professional Development Tracking Template

  • Operations Memo (4/19/26)

These outline the training expectations and how programs should document completion.

When Do These Trainings Need to Be Finished?

The memo does not specify a hard deadline. However, given the nature of the requirement, it is reasonable to assume the trainings should be completed before your UPK program begins. If you are already in the final stages of preparation, now is the time to verify your team’s progress.

Where to Find the Trainings

The required courses are listed in PDIS, and the state has published a direct link to the UPK training information. Providers should review the list, confirm which modules apply to their staff, and begin tracking completion using the state’s template.
